“Deterrence” is the concept expressed in Parliament by Giorgia Meloni to explain the reasons for Italy's yes to the 5% of GDP for defense that was made official at the NATO summit. According to the Prime Minister, however, there is no need for European defense. “The Western defense system is based on NATO where there is no army but there are national armies that cooperate with each other and therefore it would be a mistake to think of building a European defense parallel to NATO, it would be an unnecessary duplication,” Meloni said in Parliament. As for where to invest, “I am for spending to be prioritized for Italian companies,” but if that is not possible “we work with the allies”. It means that supplies will have to be secured not only from European but also American companies.
