Former Communist Party Secretary Fausto Bertinotti is auctioning off two Andy Warhol silkscreens he and his wife Lella received as an inheritance from banker Mario D'Urso. The works, dated 1972, will be auctioned on July 2 by Finarte, in Milan, with an auction base of 20-30 thousand euros each. However, experts estimate that the final price could easily exceed 150 thousand euros. The wealthy businessman and politician, a former adviser to Lehman Brothers and undersecretary in the Dini government, had bequeathed the Bertinottis part of his estate, estimated at about 24 million euros. But after his death in 2015, the existence of a secret daughter, Nikky Kay Carlson, emerged, and the will was annulled. It was the former Speaker of the House himself who appealed: “The matter is settled, otherwise we would not be at the auction,” he told Repubblica. As for the decision to sell, Bertinotti makes no secret of his motives: "I need money. I'm selling these and keeping the ones that interest me," he says frankly. He thus admits, between the lines, that he still owns several valuable pieces in the Roman home he shares with his wife Gabriella Fagno, known as Lella. And he responds to criticism with a hint of sarcasm: "There has been too much talk about the value of the works. They talk about millions...now I'm taking a little revenge on the gossip." In addition to the Warhols, two works by Piero Dorazio, estimated at between €3,000 and €4,000, both with affectionate personal dedications addressed to the Bertinottis, will also go to auction. They are followed by a ceramic sculpture by Giosetta Fioroni (3 to 4,000 euros) and a painting by Titina Maselli, sister of director Citto Maselli, whose value ranges between 4 and 6,000 euros.
