In 2023, more than two thirds of Italian adolescents, aged between 11 and 19, said they had been victims of at least one offensive, disrespectful or violent behaviour, online or offline, in the previous 12 months. This was revealed by the ISTAT report “Bullying and cyberbullying in teenage relationships”. 21% of the boys interviewed claimed to have suffered these episodes on an ongoing basis, thus falling within the definition of bullying. The incidence varies across the country: in the North-West, 71% of teenagers said they had experienced such behaviour, compared to 66.5% of their peers in the South. The frequency of bullying episodes is also higher in the North: 22.1% of teenagers in the North-East and 21.6% of those in the North-West have been victims of bullying on an ongoing basis, compared with 20% in the South. Bullying also affects boys of foreign origin more frequently: 26.8% have suffered recurrent offensive behaviour, a significantly higher percentage than the 20.4% of their Italian peers. The most affected communities are those of Romanian (29.2%) and Ukrainian (27.8%) origin.
