Night Spirit, the police dog who became a symbol of hope and courage during the Morandi Bridge tragedy, has died at the age of 14. The Australian shepherd with an exceptional nose, together with his handler, Inspector Laura Bisio, was the protagonist of countless rescue missions. His name will remain forever linked to the tragic 14 August 2018, when the collapsed viaduct in Genoa claimed 43 lives. In those dramatic hours, Night Spirit helped save six people trapped under the rubble. Despite injuries to his paws caused by glass and metal sheets, he even descended into the riverbed to report the presence of three survivors. Shortly before, he had already spotted three other women, enabling rescuers to pull them to safety. After years of service, Night Spirit had “retired” three years ago, but his last feat remains etched in his memory: he managed to find a visually impaired 87-year-old man who had gone missing during a large fire on the outskirts of Genoa. The Genoa State Police bid him farewell with an emotional message: “From today Night Spirit will run on the Rainbow Bridge”.
