Starting August 19th, Italy will introduce the first ban against spoofing, a technology that allows the creation of false phone numbers used for annoying telemarketing calls or, worse, frauds aimed at stealing money from current accounts. A more thorough filter will go into effect on November 19th, affecting both landline and mobile numbers. These deadlines were defined by a resolution of the Agcom (Communications Authority) announced on May 19th, which compels telephone operators to implement the two blocks within three and six months of publication. In practice, spoofing is sending the recipient a call that appears to be from an Italian number, whether random or affiliated with a known entity such as the police or bank. This encourages the user to respond, believing the call is real, and to trust what the interlocutor says.
