The Court of Cassation has upheld the life sentence of Paolo Bellini, a former member of Avanguardia Nazionale, held responsible for complicity in the Bologna massacre of August 2, 1980. The tragic attack claimed the lives of 85 people and injured over 200 others, making it one of the saddest moments in recent Italian history. In addition to Bellini, the Court of Cassation upheld a six-year prison sentence for former Carabinieri captain Piergiorgio Segatel, who was found guilty of obstruction of justice, and a four-year prison sentence for Domenico Catracchia, the manager of several apartments on Via Gradoli in Rome, for making false statements to the public prosecutor. Antonio Balsamo, deputy attorney general of the Court of Cassation, emphasized the significance of the sentencing, describing it as "a fundamental step towards the full realization of the right to the truth", a right that belongs not just to the victims and their families, but to all Italians. In addition, Balsamo emphasized that the judicial process was bolstered by the tenacious pursuit of the truth by the families of the victims, which transformed suffering into hope and courage, thereby serving as an example for the national community. The Victims' Association praised the sentencing as "a decisive point of arrival" and the culmination of years of dedication to justice and truth. Lawyer Andrea Speranzoni, defending the civil party, noted that this sentence conclusively confirms not only who financed and orchestrated the attack, but also the background related to the so-called "strategy of tension" and the diversionary activity that followed those awful events. Bellini's conviction, Speranzoni added, is a critical piece in understanding the role of the offenders and instigators, as well as the connections to secret service circles and dishonest institutional actors.
