The Sanremo Festival may soon no longer be in Sanremo. The news, which exploded in recent hours, has ignited a heated debate among curiosity, skepticism and questions about the future of the historic music event. Is this just a provocation, perhaps useful to push the “City of Flowers” toward a more cooperative attitude? Or is the Italian national broadcaster RAI really considering concrete alternatives, tired of the growing tensions with the city administration? What is certain is that relations between the City of San Remo and the broadcaster based at Viale Mazzini seem far from serene. At the center of the dispute would be economic demands deemed excessive, including an extra million euros to host the Festival and a share on advertising revenues. Added to this is a reflection on the facilities, which are considered inadequate by those organizing the event. Meanwhile, RAI is looking elsewhere. It seems that some informal surveys have already been conducted, gathering interest from several Italian locations. In the front row is Tuscany, with Viareggio possibly standing alone or together with other Versilia localities. Romagna and Marche follow, with Rimini and Senigallia ready to enter the game, while from the South come the availability of the Gargano and the Amalfi Coast. The hypothesis on the table is that of a traveling edition, with a possible debut in 2027 and a two-year rotation between host cities. For Viareggio, in particular, it would also be a symbolic return to its origins: in 1948 and 1949, in fact, it was its stages that hosted two of the very first editions of the Italian Song Festival.
