The cloistered nuns of the Monastery of Santa Chiara in Rome's Monteverde neighborhood have created an energy community: they produce solar energy, which they then feed into the grid, zeroing out or at least drastically reducing electricity and heating costs. The community includes other consumers and “prosumers” in the neighborhood. The plant has a capacity of 70 kilowatt hours for an annual energy production of 100 megawatt hours. Mother Elena Francesca, the abbess of the monastery, is also an engineer. The savings from an economic standpoint are modest, but the model will soon be replicated on a larger scale. “We intend to contribute to the care of the common house by using green and non-fossil fuel energy,” says the nun. The neighborhood has welcomed the proposal to collaborate with “joy, amazement and curiosity”.
