“Those who study in Italy and show commitment deserve the opportunity to become Italian citizens”. This is the line proposed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani, speaking today on the sidelines of the 2025 Farmindustria Assembly underway in Rome. In his speech, Tajani outlined the contours of a proposal that aims to reform the way children of foreign citizens gain access to citizenship: "We envisage the possibility of applying for citizenship after ten years of schooling in Italy, if completed with profit. It is a serious, civic proposal, and we are ready to confront it with everyone". The reference is to the approximately one million foreign-born children attending Italian educational institutions today. “If a young person has studied the language, history, and geography of our country, has learned the values of the Constitution and civic education,” Tajani added, "then he or she should be able to choose, if he or she wishes, to become Italian. This is not an automatism, but a conscious path that requires willingness and responsibility". The minister stressed that this proposal represents a step forward from the current legislation, which allows one to apply for citizenship after ten years of continuous residence. “Here we are not just talking about residency,” he pointed out, "but about concrete commitment, study, and participation in civic life. This is, for us, the meaning of true integration".
