The rider murdered by a bear on Romania's stunning Transfăgărășan road, in the heart of the Carpathians, could be Italian. According to local media, the animal dragged the victim into the woods, where his body was discovered almost an hour later by rescuers. The bear, believed to be responsible for the incident, was then shot. The license plate of the motorcycle discovered by the side of the road, which is registered in Italy, indicates that the victim may be an Italian citizen. However, the man's identity has yet to be officially confirmed. The tragedy occurred on the section connecting the Vidraru dam to Lake Bâlea, in an area popular with visitors and motorcyclists due to its stunning scenery. According to preliminary reports, the man was riding with other bikers when he chose to pull over to picture a bear with her cubs. At that point, the animal advanced aggressively and attacked him. The contents of the man's cell phone confirm the dynamics: you can observe a series of images in which the bear, irritated by the close proximity, gets progressively dangerous before initiating the attack. The area surrounding Vidraru has traditionally been the site of close encounters with wildlife. Based on official data, the bear population in the region is at least 112 specimens, which is nearly four times the sustainable number, which is estimated to be 25. Only at the end of May, a Polish tourist and a Spanish woman were injured in two separate incidents in the same area.
