In 2024, Europe's airports handled about 1.82 billion passengers, exceeding the 1.8 billion recorded in 2019. Tourist flows have boosted growth rates in Italy (+13% in 2019), Spain (+11.9%), and Portugal (+16.2%). In contrast, the slow recovery of business travel and a decrease in domestic flights have resulted in a slowdown in countries such as Germany (-16.8%), France (-3.8%), and the Netherlands (-6.8%), which have experienced a decline in travel activity in various market segments compared to pre-Covid values. Low-cost carrier Ryanair confirms its position as the European airline that transported the most people in 2024 (a record it will also hold in 2025). In Italy, low-cost airlines accommodate more than 58 out of every 100 passengers. Puglia, Bari, and Brindisi airports have had the biggest growth. Milan Malpensa remains the leading airport in air freight transport, accounting for 59% of the national total (+13.2% in 2019). At the same time, Rome Fiumicino and Venice have experienced significant growth.
