They organized in great detail the crossing of migrants along the eastern Mediterranean route, from Turkey to the shores of the province of Reggio Calabria. It was a well-trodden traffic, run by four international criminal associations now in the crosshairs of the Reggio Calabria District Anti-Mafia Directorate, which coordinated the "Medusa" operation together with the Central Operations Service and the Reggio Calabria Mobile Squad. Twenty-five foreign nationals have been arrested, while another forty-three are under investigation at large. The investigation, which also involved the National Anti-Mafia Directorate, Eurojust, Europol, Interpol and the International Police Cooperation Service, reconstructed more than thirty landings that occurred between 2017 and 2022. In total, an estimated two thousand migrants were illegally transported by sea, aboard overloaded sailboats, for a turnover of about ten million euros. The main suspects - scapegoats and leaders of the organizations - are citizens from Georgia, Ukraine, Turkey and Moldova. The investigation also led to the seizure of assets with a total value of more than three million euros. A major blow dealt to a transnational criminal system that exploited the desperation of migrants to accumulate illicit wealth.
