Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and his counterparts from Greece and Malta and to the European Union Commissioner for Migration, Magnus Brunner, were turned away yesterday at Benghazi airport in Libya, where they had arrived as part of a Team Europe mission, through which the European Commission and member states work in a coordinated manner to maximize the impact of their respective development cooperation strategies. An official note from the Libyan government speaks of "blatant overstepping of diplomatic protocols and international conventions through behavior that does not respect Libyan national sovereignty", which "represents a clear violation of Libyan laws. Such actions ignore the procedures provided for the entry and stay of diplomats and foreigners, as established by the Libyan government's regulations". In light of this, the planned visit of the Interior Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Greece and Malta, as well as the European Commissioner for Migration and the team accompanied by them, has been "cancelled". This decision was made after the delegation arrived at Benina International Airport in Benghazi, and the four were informed of the need to leave Libyan territory immediately "as they are not welcome". In the harsh statement, the Libyan government "reiterates once again to all diplomats, members of international missions and governmental and nongovernmental organizations the importance of respecting the sovereignty of the Libyan state, pledging to fully respect Libyan laws, conventions and international agreements governing diplomatic visits. Any interaction with the Libyan government must be in accordance with the provisions of these agreements and norms". The note is signed by Osama Saad Hamad, President of the Libyan government in Benghazi, which, however, does not control the Tripoli region, ruled instead by Dabaiba.
