Green light to the amendment to the Infrastructure Decree that introduces more flexibility for Euro 5 cars and diesel vehicles. This was announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and Deputy PM Matteo Salvini, stressing his “great satisfaction” with the measure. With the new rule, the Euro 5 diesel driving ban in Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna is postponed by one year, coming into effect on October 1, 2026 instead of 2025. But there is more: the measure narrows the scope of its application, which will prioritize urban areas in municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, thus excluding smaller towns (previously the limit was set at 30,000 inhabitants). Moreover, even after 2026, regions may avoid the introduction of the block for Euro 5 diesel vehicles for commercial use, provided that alternative measures effective in reducing pollutant emissions are adopted.
