Carola Rackete is leaving her seat in the European Parliament. Breaking the news was The Left Group, which bid a grateful farewell to the German MEP, elected with Die Linke, recalling her commitment to climate and social justice. “From the beginning, my team and I have been reflecting on how to live out this mandate collectively, and it is this spirit that is now embodied in my resignation,” explained Rackete, former captain of the Sea Watch ship and a symbol of the sea rescue battle that has jumped to international attention for its clash with Matteo Salvini in 2019. An environmental activist and figurehead for many social movements, Rackete wanted to thank the voters and activists who put their trust in her. During her time in Brussels, she has worked within the ENVI, ECON and AGRI committees, promoting ambitious environmental policies and denouncing the consequences of current European migration strategies.
