In 2024, according to Eurostat, the European Union had nearly 202 million households, but only 23.6% of them included children, underlining a concerning demographic trend. With a mere 22.2% of Italian households having children, Italy is among the countries with the lowest percentages, ranking below the European average. In the EU, nearly half of households with children (49.8%) have only one child, 37.6% have two, and only 12.6% have three or more. In all EU countries, families with one child are the majority, with the exception of the Netherlands, where the percentage of families with two children is the highest. These findings highlight the critical need for tailored measures to increase birth rates and support families in order to combat population decline and ensure long-term social and economic viability.
