At Italian airports when boarding domestic flights and flights to Schengen area countries, it is no longer necessary to show ID in addition to the boarding pass. This is a provision of the National Civil Aviation Authority (ENAC). The countries in the Schengen area, the space that allows the free movement of more than 450 million people, are 25 of the 27 member states of the European Union. About 51 million travelers departing from Italian airports could benefit from the change by the end of the year, rising to 92 million considering the whole of 2026. Document checks at boarding of flights with non-Schengen destinations remain. It should also be remembered that ID card, passport (or driver's license, on domestic routes) should not be left at home. Not only because there will still be spot checks, but also because they will be needed later to return to Italy, particularly if boarding an international flight from a country that does not provide this facility.
