The space economy is a fast-growing sector in Italy. Leonardo (formerly Finmeccanica) has created a new division entirely dedicated to space, while Thales Alenia Space has announced a new collaboration agreement with SpeQtral to expand the strategic partnership for the development of quantum communications between space and Earth. A further boost is now expected from the recently passed “Provisions for the Space Economy” law. Outer space is recognized as a strategic crossroads where geopolitical, economic, technological and military interests converge. In addition, the new legislation aims to attract investment and foster the growth of national competitiveness, including through the development of cutting-edge skills and technologies. The Italian Space Agency will have a central role as a supervisory authority; its task will be to issue authorizations and apply any sanctions. Also among the new features is the introduction of a mandatory insurance scheme to protect third parties and ground infrastructure, with defined coverage and liability.
