A new oceanographic ship will make it possible to traverse not only the Mediterranean Sea, but also the Atlantic or Pacific oceans, for deep-water and seafloor monitoring down to 4,000 meters; it will be a remotely piloted, autonomous underwater vehicle, with ultra-high-resolution acoustic instruments and laboratories equipped with very high technology. The ship represents one of the pivotal projects of the Marine Ecosystem Restoration, the largest planned investment in Italy for the protection of the marine environment: 400 million euros earmarked to protect and restore fragile ecosystems, starting with those that are submerged, invisible and largely unknown. A major national project, coordinated by the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) and the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security.
