There are more than 4.7 million Italians who, in the last year, have traveled by air suffering the theft or loss of their luggage. This is revealed by a survey commissioned by Facile.it to EMG Different, which portrays a phenomenon that is anything but rare and constantly growing. In detail, 16.8% of travelers - just over 4 million people - have permanently lost their suitcase, lost by the airline and never found again. Added to this is the 8% of cases (about 1.5 million) in which luggage was returned late. Rarer, but still significant, are also the thefts that occurred directly at the airport: about 549 thousand Italians have had their luggage stolen not attributable to the airline. In the face of these numbers, attention to travel policies is growing. According to data collected by Facile.it, in June 2025 online searches for vacation-related insurance products increased by 5% compared to the same month in 2024.
