An agreement has been reached between John, Lapo and Ginevra Elkann and the Internal Revenue Service to end the tax dispute related to the inheritance of Marella Agnelli, widow of lawyer Gianni Agnelli. The agreement calls for the payment of €175 million, a figure that includes taxes, penalties and interest. The payment was made without any admission of guilt on the part of the heirs, who wanted to quickly close an affair described as “painful” on a personal and family level. The settlement, however, does not close every aspect of the matter. A criminal investigation for alleged tax fraud and defrauding the state remains open in Turin. At the center of the investigation is Marella Agnelli's Swiss residence, believed by investigators to be fictitious, and the hypothesis that it was used to evade the Italian tax authorities. During the investigation, prosecutors ordered seizures of more than €74 million, including life annuities, company shares and assets traceable to offshore trusts. The measures also involved a number of professionals, including a Swiss accountant and notary. The Elkann family has always rejected all charges, denying the existence of concealed assets.
