With 232,841 businesses and 1,089,710 employees, the sea economy in Italy generates a direct value added of 76.6 billion euros, which, if the value activated in the rest of the economy is also considered, reaches 216.7 billion euros, or 11.3% of GDP. The sector is clearly growing in every respect. Employment is growing with a +7.7% increase in employees, more than four times the national growth (+1.9%). The number of enterprises is also on the rise in the two-year period 2022-2024: +2%, in contrast to the general figure for the national economy, which marks -2.4%. The different components of the blue economy's productive force are fishing, shipbuilding, accommodation and catering, sports and recreation, mining, cargo and passenger handling, research, regulation and environmental protection.
