The Appeals Board of the Chamber of Deputies — the equivalent of a supreme court for the Italian Parliament — has rejected the appeal filed by around 800 former MPs against the pension reduction that was instituted in 2018 under President Roberto Fico. This was confirmed in an official statement from the Chamber, which attests to the legitimacy of Resolution No. 14 and the ensuing mitigation measures for older members. Unlike the Senate, which accepted a similar request in 2022 to reinstate pensions for all retired senators, the Chamber of Deputies continues the recalculation based on contributions paid and years of pension payments. Certain former deputies faced pension reductions of up to 90%. This decision has a particularly significant impact on former parliamentarians with fewer legislative terms or younger age profiles, who were excluded from the benefits of a 2021 court ruling. With this rejection, the appellants have exhausted their internal legal channels and may now seek a political solution from the Bureau of the Presidency, which is directed by Lorenzo Fontana. Antonio Bassolino, Claudio Scajola, Giovanna Melandri, Ilona Staller, Paolo Guzzanti, Angelino Alfano, Mario Capanna, Gianni Alemanno, Manuela Di Centa, and Claudio Martelli are among the well-known individuals who have filed the appeal.
