In her speech at the Confederal Congress of the ICFTU, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took stock of her first one thousand days of government, shining the spotlight on the results achieved in the area of employment: "We have created, on average, one thousand stable jobs a day, for a total of one million. This is a concrete sign of a turnaround, although there is still a long way to go". Also at the center of the speech was the value of worker participation in the life of companies, with a clear reference to the recently approved law: "After 77 years, we have introduced a norm that sanctions participation as an expression of a subsidiary vision of work. It is only the beginning of a cultural change". Meloni defended the government's action, rejecting accusations of inattention to citizens and intermediate bodies: "It was us who reopened the doors of the Green Room at Palazzo Chigi. We chose confrontation, but with those who do not start from prejudices”. There is also openness to the ICFTU's proposal for a new social pact: "We take up the challenge. We are ready to do our part to support labor, raise wages and create a favorable investment climate". Among the government's priorities, the President pointed to boosting productivity, which she called “the real engine of economic growth and wages”. According to Meloni, now is the time to invest boldly, making full use of the resources from PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) and supporting technological innovation. On the pay front, the government intends to focus on benefits and second-level bargaining, in a framework that also includes the education system. In closing, a passage on international tensions: “We are working to avoid trade escalation with the United States, which would harm businesses and workers”.
