A powerful earthquake was detected in Naples this morning around 9:15 a.m. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.0 and a depth of about 2.5 km, originated in the Bagnoli section of the Campi Flegrei caldera. The tremor was felt vividly in various neighborhoods throughout the city, mainly in the west, but also in the center. Many scared residents . "Doors and balconies began banging, and chandeliers were swinging", a witness reported. No damage has been recorded so far, although inspections are taking place throughout the city, particularly in public buildings. "We don't expect serious consequences," stated Edoardo Cosenza, the City Councilor for Infrastructure. Meanwhile, rail travel on the Cumana and Circumflegrea lines between Naples and the Phlegraean Fields has been halted for safety concerns. Trenitalia warns that high-speed, intercity, and regional trains may be delayed as well. According to the Vesuvius Observatory, the major shock is part of a seismic swarm that has recorded twelve events so far, two of which were magnitude 1.5 and had epicenters in Pozzuoli. Just a few weeks ago, on June 30, the area was struck by a magnitude 4.6 earthquake, the biggest yet recorded in the Phlegraean fields.
