South Tyrol is proposing keeping primary school open in July. The initiative, which was proposed by Education Councilor Francesca Gerosa, is motivated by the positive experience of summer preschool. The purpose is to provide families with tangible support throughout the summer months, providing educational continuity and a more adaptable school environment through workshops, activities, and socializing. Because of its exceptional autonomy, the Province can handle the school calendar on its own, as long as the 200 school days per year are observed. However, the project confronts substantial challenges, including increased expenditures, staffing needs, legal limits, and union opposition. Currently, it is merely a proposal under consideration. If adopted, it has the potential to serve as a model for other Italian areas; however, discussion, reliable resources, and a shared regulatory framework are first needed.
