It all seemed to be over. After two cardiac arrests and more than half an hour of unsuccessful resuscitative maneuvers, health officials had declared a 78-year-old man dead and discontinued operations. The helicopter had already been sent back and the hearse awaited at the scene. But suddenly, inside the ambulance, something unbelievable happened: the man opened his eyes again and asked about his daughters. The incident happened on the evening of July 18 in Marina Velca, on the coast of Tarquinia, in the province of Viterbo. The man, of Libyan origin, was taken ill in his home. Rescue workers from 118 quickly responded, but his condition turned out to be very serious: two heart attacks, followed by two cardiac arrests. After long attempts at resuscitation, doctors had to give up and pronounced him dead. But what happened in the next few minutes is unbelievable. According to health officials, it would be a very rare case of “Lazarus syndrome”, a still poorly understood phenomenon in which the heart spontaneously resumes beating after life-saving maneuvers are interrupted. The man was immediately rechecked and transported to the hospital, where he is now hospitalized in a stable and conscious condition. Adding to the excitement of the evening was an unforeseen incident during the operation: a Carabiniere, who was present to facilitate operations, was injured by the man's dog, a large specimen that veterinary personnel were trying to secure. The serviceman was taken to the hospital, but his condition was of no concern.
