The period of high monetary tightening imposed by central banks led, from 2022 to 2024, to an extraordinary cycle of profits for Italian banks, which recorded total profits of more than €112 billion. A result made possible by rising interest rates, which in 2024 alone saw banks achieve record profits of €46.5 billion, a significant leap from previous periods. The turning point came starting in 2022. After a less bright period between 2018 and 2021, when profits hovered between €15 billion and €16 billion, the banking sector saw a significant recovery. In 2022, net profit reached €25.5 billion, while in 2023 it rose to more than €40.7 billion, reaching a record high in 2024. Last year, the sector's revenues reached €110.1 billion, up 7.2% from the previous year and up 33.8% from 2018. Another factor contributing to these excellent results is the return of credit as the main source of revenue for banks.
