Among the protagonists of Made in Italy is the outdoor sports manufacturing sector, with Italy leading the European production market with 22%, followed by Austria (14.8%), Germany (14.7%), and France (12.9%). Italy is the sole European nation (along with Belgium and Poland) that has consistently maintained a positive trade balance of €3.3 billion in exports versus €2.7 billion in imports, despite facing competition from China and Vietnam. The advantage is even greater when considering only non-EU countries. The Italian sports product industry's leadership relies on its leadership in the following categories: water sports apparel, skis/skates, target shooting rifles, sports footwear, and gymnastics and athletics equipment. Italy ranks second in Europe — behind Austria — for winter sports and tennis equipment, and third for cycling products. Veneto alone generates 36%, Trentino Alto Adige 20%, and Lombardy the remaining 17%.
