In the first six months of 2025, Italy received about 10 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas, accounting for 30% of total gas imports and making it the second largest source of supply behind Algerian pipeline gas (34% of incoming volumes). In May and June of this year, imports from the United States surpassed Algerian shipments that arrived in Italy through the Mazara del Vallo hub. In comparison to the first six months of 2024, the growth is particularly noteworthy: LNG imports increased by 35%, largely due to the Ravenna plant's commencement and the Livorno regasification terminal's return to full capacity. The increasing share of LNG in Italy's energy mix also results from the diversification of supply sources — a process accelerated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine — with a growing presence of liquefied gas from the USA. Indeed, based on this year's numbers, 45% of the 124 cargoes already landed in Italy originated from the United States: 56 ships in all, compared to 31 that arrived in the peninsula during the same period in 2024.
