The Senate has adopted the government-initiated bill establishing the crime of femicide and other legislative measures to address violence against women. After the Justice Committee's extensive amendments, the measure includes 14 articles and introduces the new, distinct crime of femicide, which is punishable by life imprisonment when the murder occurs for reasons of control, possession, domination, rejection, or hatred toward the woman. In cases of domestic, sexual, or stalking violence, aggravating circumstances are strengthened, and a variety of procedural and penitentiary protections are implemented to protect victims and their families. These protections include the mandatory confiscation of assets, the obligation to promptly interview the victim, and the availability of anti-violence centers for child victims on an independent basis. Lastly, the law involves the implementation of financial measures to safeguard orphans, an update to the criteria for accessing prison benefits, and investment in training for magistrates, health workers, and other professionals.
