The number of Italians migrating overseas is increasing: over 156,000 people left last year, with 113,000 of them under the age of 40. To this group 37,825 retirees must be added. According to the most recent INPS Annual Report, 33 out of every 100,000 retirees leave, a threefold increase from the previous fifteen years, when the rate was about 10 out of 100,000 in 2010. More favorable tax arrangements, a nicer environment, and a higher standard of living are among the reasons that pensioners are leaving the peninsula. Spain is the most popular location, followed by Portugal, although other options include Switzerland, France, Germany, Albania, and Tunisia. And, unlike in the past, the regions with the highest emigration rates now include those in the North near international borders, such as Friuli Venezia Giulia, Valle d'Aosta, and Trentino-Alto Adige.
