Italy is booming with “plastic free” municipalities. The association against single-use plastics, “Plastic Free Onlus”, has reached a historic milestone in the fight against polymer pollution, with more than 500 memoranda of understanding signed with municipalities across the Boot that have significantly impacted the reduction of single plastic use and the proper management of urban waste. The regional record for the number of protocols signed belongs to Veneto, with 78 municipalities adhering. This is followed by Lombardy (46), Sicily (43), Piedmont and Puglia (39). A wide and varied network that embraces the entire national territory, from North to South, also involving smaller and virtuous realities, such as Molise (31 protocols) and Trentino-Alto Adige (13). There is no shortage of large cities such as Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Bologna, Florence, Bari and Catania. There are already 122 municipalities that have obtained the “plastic free” recognition, awarded for taking concrete measures in favor of the environment.
