Etruria always manages to surprise: a singular building has just been unearthed inside the necropolis of Sasso Pinzuto, in Tuscania (Viterbo), where, since 2022, excavation campaigns have been underway led by the University “Federico II” of Naples and the Center for Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies (Camnes) in Florence. Based on the discovery of some architectural terracottas decorated in mold with themes dear to the Etruscan aristocracies of the Archaic period (chariot processions, banquets and dances), the building should date back to the second quarter of the same century. What was its function? It was a place where funerary cults could take place, built in the area of the necropolis, by a family of aristocratic rank, who wanted to emphasize in this way their social position within their community and their values. Similar buildings, in Etruria, can be found at Vulci and Cortona. An inviolate shrine, about 80 centimeters long and covered with a tufa slab, was also found nearby. It is a baby bottle and refers to the burial of an infant that took place in the first half of the sixth century BC.
