Unfortunately, HIV continues to have a strong presence and is far from eradicated in Italy. From 2018 to 2024, approximately one in 130 cases tested positive out of over 11,400 tests. One positive result was detected in 279 tests conducted among individuals who were tested for the first time, according to ANLAIDS estimates. Of those who were tested, 43% were between the ages of 18 and 24, 28% were between the ages of 25 and 30, and 16% were between the ages of 31 and 40. About 61% reported heterosexual behavior, and 34% homosexual. 75% were Italians and 25% were foreigners. The fast test, which is also available in a saliva variant, is anonymous, non-invasive, and free, with results accessible in a few minutes. As per the most recent information from the Italian National Institute of Health, the number of new HIV diagnoses in 2023 increased significantly, indicating a return to pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels. The number of new diagnoses was 2,349, which corresponds to an incidence of 4.0 cases per 100,000 residents, a 9.8% increase from 2022.
