Banks will be obligated to open current accounts for anyone who asks them and to keep them open if there are active balances, with the exception of extreme circumstances such as money laundering and terrorism. With a bipartisan vote, the law acknowledging the right of all individuals to a current account has been enacted by the Chamber of Deputies and is currently in the process of being sent to the Senate. In a country like Italy, where there are 48 million current accounts, a 13% growth from 2019, the bill intends to address the demands of residents who have had their current accounts terminated "unilaterally and without reason" by their bank, while having active balances. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini described it as a "historic victory for the Lega".
