"With the MPH module, Italy will build the first permanent home for astronauts on the Moon: a movable habitat dedicated to scientific research and exploration. This is the outcome of a well-defined political objective: to establish Italy as a space power". Senator Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy and Delegate Authority for Space and Aerospace Policies, made this statement in response to the signing of the contract between Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo, and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). The contract covers the development of the preliminary design phase of MPH, a multipurpose habitation module for the lunar surface, as part of the Artemis agreements between NASA and ASI. Thales Alenia Space has signed a contract with the Italian Space Agency (ASI) to carry out the conceptual design phase of MPH, a multipurpose lunar habitation module, which includes the development of crucial enabling technologies. With a launch planned from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in 2033, MPH will be the first true habitation asset dedicated to the Moon’s surface under the Artemis agreements between NASA and ASI, a Moon-based bilateral collaboration. The MPH module will safely shelter astronauts throughout their flights, assist surface operations, allow scientific research activities with and without a crew, and allow for surface mobility. MPH, which has a ten-year operational lifespan, will function as a permanent surface habitat that can work in tandem with other Artemis architecture parts.
