The present global context is "sadly characterized by wars, violence, injustice, and extreme weather phenomena, which compel millions of individuals to flee their homelands in search of refuge elsewhere. The prevalent propensity to focus solely on the interests of specific communities poses a severe danger to shared responsibility, multilateral collaboration, the pursuit of the common good, and global solidarity for the benefit of the entire human family". So writes Pope Leo XIV in his Message for the 111th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, to be celebrated on October 4–5, in conjunction with the Jubilee of Migrants and the Missionary World, on the theme: “Migrants, Missionaries of Hope". The Pontiff finds "the challenges of the present and future to be increasingly demanding due to the prospect of a renewed arms race and the development of new weapons, including nuclear weapons, the lack of consideration for the harmful effects of the ongoing climate crisis, and profound economic inequalities". According to Leo XIV, "the quest of happiness—and the chance of finding it elsewhere—is undoubtedly one of the primary incentives for contemporary human movement. This relationship between migration and hope", he writes, "is plainly revealed in many of today's migratory experiences. Many migrants, refugees, and displaced people are privileged witnesses to hope experienced in everyday life, through their faith in God and perseverance in the face of suffering, in anticipation of a future in which they see in which they glimpse the nearness of happiness and integral human development". "In a world "darkened" by war and injustice, even "where all seems lost, migrants and refugees stand as messengers of hope", the Pontiff adds. "Their courage and tenacity is a heroic testimony to a faith that sees beyond what our eyes can see and gives them the strength to overcome death along the various contemporary migration routes. Here, too, we may draw a clear parallel with the experience of the Israelites walking in the desert, who faced every danger with confidence in the Lord's protection".
