By the end of the year, Brunelleschi’s 15th-century Dome at Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence will be equipped with a new monitoring system. The system will detect deformations, displacements, and accelerations throughout the structure using advanced technology such as temperature sensors and laser scanners. The purpose is to ensure the monument's safety, foresee hazards, and adopt appropriate preservation measures, with the option of replicating the system on other historic structures. The innovative system will allow continuous monitoring of the structural behavior of the world's largest brick dome. Brunelleschi's Dome, which has towered over Florence since 1436, was the outcome of a distinctive engineering challenge. However, it now faces structural issues that necessitate ongoing monitoring.
