Over a thousand hectares of vegetation reduced to ashes, cars burned, bathers rescued at sea and homes evacuated. Sardinia again ends up in the grip of fires. The most serious incident occurred Sunday at Punta Molentis beach in Villasimius in the southeastern part of the island. The flames devoured more than 100 hectares of forest and from the mountain reached all the way to the beach, forcing hundreds of people to seek refuge at sea from where they were rescued by several rescue boats. The damage count will still be high. Not only the vegetation was destroyed, but also dozens of cars got lost to flames. In Ogliastra, a fire broke out between Cardedu and Bari Sardo with tourists on the beach and houses evacuated as a precaution. Flames also broke out in Sulcis where flames licked some homes in a hamlet of Carbonia.
