According to a Censis report, from 2017 to 2023, the sector with the greatest mismatch between job supply and demand in Italy was nursing and midwifery. In this situation, the difference is a staggering 70.7%. To be more precise, this implies that in seven out of ten instances, hospitals or clinics are unable to recruit sufficient candidates to cover vacant positions for nurses or midwives. As a result, those who opt to pursue healthcare professions such as nursing and midwifery are very likely to find a job. Other professions in the same medical sector rank immediately below them in terms of the most sought-after occupations: 66.8% for pharmacists and 64% for doctors. Healthcare technicians are the next highest-ranking occupation, while being slightly behind in percentage terms. In their case, outpatient clinics and diagnostic centers can fill only 48.8% of positions—just one in two. There is also a shortage of IT expertise. Censis notes that Italian companies struggle to fill 46.6% of openings for IT professionals.
