The University of Pisa has dissolved two framework agreements with Israel's Reichman and Hebrew universities. This decision follows demands from students and faculty and is based on a new statute, unanimously approved in January 2025, in which the University acknowledged peace as a fundamental value and "neither supports nor participates in any activity aimed at the production, development, or improvement of weapons and war systems". The University's Board of Directors declared that "the decision, which was made in response to the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, is a political gesture directed at the Government of the State of Israel, urging a cessation of hostilities and the pursuit of a just and sustainable peace". "This is not an act against Israeli universities per se", says Riccardo Zucchi, Rector of the University of Pisa, “we continue to collaborate on projects related to the environment and neuroscience. We have no intention of jeopardizing the scientific, cultural, and personal relationships between researchers and students. Ours is an act of ethical and civic obligation, motivated by what looks to be continuous ethnic cleansing, and consistent with the University's statutory standards".
