During the Fan Ceremony, a traditional meeting with the parliamentary press, President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella devoted a passage of his speech to the situation in the Gaza Strip, calling it “grave and intolerable”. A passage also on the raid that hit the Holy Family Church in Gaza. Mattarella specified that the Israelis immediately explained that it was a mistake, and he commented with the famous Latin quote 'to err is human, to persevere is diabolical'. During the meeting with the parliamentary press, after addressing the situation in the Gaza Strip, Mattarella also addressed in his speech the return of incidents of anti-Semitism, a serious and worrying phenomenon, according to the President fueled by stupidity. During the ceremony, the Head of State spoke about a particular trend in international politics. “There was a time,” the President explained, “when the most important leaders and countries aimed to be admired and therefore listened to internationally”; today, according to Mattarella, many leaders and countries prefer to be feared than admired, creating tensions and ignoring the lessons of history. President Mattarella then defended the World Health Organization, calling it a point of reference for the security of all and particularly indispensable for Africa: “After the Covid pandemic” and “the dangers of new pandemics, a world increasingly gathered in life and united in communications requires common tools such as that, precious, of the WHO, the World Health Organization”.
