The municipal council of Feltre, where the center-right majority is in power, has revoked Benito Mussolini's honorary citizenship. At the same time, a square was dedicated in honor of Giacomo Matteotti, a Socialist MP assassinated by the fascists. The decision is particularly significant, as just a short distance from Feltre, at Villa Gaggia, Mussolini met with Adolf Hitler on July 19, 1943 — for the last time in his role as head of government. However, Feltre is not an exceptional instance; in recent weeks, Paliano (Frosinone) and San Giovanni Rotondo (Foggia) have also voted unanimously to remove his citizenship. Salò, where Fascism established the Italian Social Republic in September 1943, likewise implemented the same action at the end of February. Salò had also granted Mussolini the status of honorary citizen in 1924, just weeks prior to Matteotti's assassination.
