The European Commission has set October 12, 2025 as the date for the gradual start of digital checks for those entering or leaving Italy and other EU countries. The so-called Entry/Exit System is an advanced technological system that will digitally record the entry and exit of third-country nationals traveling to 29 European countries, for short-term stays. It will capture biometric data, such as fingerprints, facial image and other travel information, gradually replacing the current passport stamping system. The new system will provide reliable data on border crossings, systematically detect overstayers and cases of document and identity fraud. It will thus help prevent irregular migration and protect the security of European citizens.
