Adriana Asti, a great theater and film actress, died in her sleep in Rome at the age of 94. She was born in Milan on April 30, 1931, and in her long career worked with the greatest directors, from Giorgio Strehler to Luchino Visconti, Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Luca Ronconi. She made nearly 60 films: the last was “A woman’s name” by Marco Tullio Giordana, who had already directed her in “The best of youth”. The news of her passing was published by the newspaper Il Foglio. The stage name of Adelaide Aste, Adriana Asti had made her theater debut in 1951, acting in Plautus's “Miles Gloriosus” with the stable company of Bolzano, to achieve her first personal success with a part in Arthur Miller's “The crucible” directed by Luchino Visconti. With Visconti came her first film success, with “Rocco and his brothers” in 1960, after appearing very young in Dino Risi's short film “Buio in sala” (“Lights out in the cinema hall”), shot in 1948. In 1961 she was in the cast of Pier Paolo Pasolini's “Accattone”, the following year in Franco Brusati's “Disorder”, in 1964 in Bernardo Bertolucci's “Before the revolution”. She then worked again with Visconti in “Ludwig” (1972), in Luis Bunuel's “Phantom of liberty”, then acting for Mauro Bolognini (“Down the ancient stairs”; “The inheritance”; “Black journal”). As a leading lady she was Felicita, the Flaubertian servant in the adaptation written by Cesare Zavattini for Vittorio De Sica and later made by Giorgio Ferrara (“A simple heart”, 1977). In 1999 she starred in David Emmer's “A non-violent life”, and in 2001 she participated in the choral film “How to make a Martini” by Kiko Stella. A voice actress for Lea Massari and Claudia Cardinale, among others, she has also been the face of TV films. Among the latest films was “The best of youth” by Marco Tullio Giordana. With Giordana in the past she had also been among the stars of “Who killed Pasolini?” and “Once you are born you can no longer hide”. Active during her career also in theater and on the small screen.
