The Italian basketball world mourns the passing of Marco Bonamico, a historic champion known by the nickname “Marine”, who died at the age of 68 at the Bellaria Hospital in Bologna after several weeks of hospitalization. Bonamico was one of the symbolic faces of Italian basketball in the 1980s, starring in 15 seasons in Serie A1 and four in A2, wearing the jerseys of Virtus and Fortitudo Bologna, as well as those of Milan, Forlì, Udine and Naples. He was among the architects of the star scudetto won by Virtus in 1984, and with the Italian national team he collected 154 appearances, winning gold at the 1983 European Championships and Olympic silver in Moscow in 1980. After retiring from the court, he had remained close to the basketball world as a television commentator and, in 2009, served as President of LegaDue.
