A 77-year-old man died at Santa Maria Goretti Hospital in Latina after being admitted in serious condition last July 17. The man, who had a history of chronic diseases, is the fifth victim of the West Nile virus in Lazio. Just a few days ago, a 93-year-old woman died at Rome's Spallanzani Hospital from the same infection. Concern is also growing in Lombardy, where new cases are being reported. After the hospitalization of a 66-year-old woman from Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, a 60-year-old man living in Lomellina, who was treated at Beato Matteo Hospital in Vigevano, was also diagnosed with the virus. The man presented with a very high fever and symptoms of disorientation; tests confirmed meningitis as a complication of the virus. His condition is improving and he could be discharged in the coming days. According to data from the National Institute of Health, there were 484 cases of West Nile infection in 2024, including 266 in the neuroinvasive form, and 36 deaths. The virus, transmitted exclusively through the bite of infected mosquitoes, is not transmitted from person to person. Experts continue to recommend individual prevention measures, while reiterating that the situation is currently under control.
