A very serious accident this morning on the A1 highway, in the section between the Arezzo and Valdarno toll booths, at the height of kilometer 338. Around 11:10 a.m., for reasons still being ascertained, several vehicles traveling in the same direction were involved in a violent impact: among them a truck, an ambulance, a car with a trailer in tow, a truck and a tourist bus. Having the worst of it was the ambulance of the Misericordia di Terranuova Bracciolini, which was run over by the trailer of the truck. The three occupants - volunteers Giovanni Trappolini and Giulia Santoni, along with patient Franco Lovari - died instantly. The victims were on board the rescue vehicle, which was most likely headed to a hospital facility. The overall toll is 15 people injured, one of them in code red and four others in serious condition. Rescue operations were particularly complex, partly because of the large number of vehicles involved. On the scene were firefighters, traffic police, paramedics, 118 teams, as well as two regional emergency service helicopters, Pegaso 1 and Pegaso 3, which took off from Florence and Grosseto. The area was quickly cordoned off to allow landing and securing operations. The injured were transported to hospitals in Arezzo, Siena and other facilities in the area. The maxi-emergency protocol was activated. The dynamics of the incident are now being investigated by the competent authorities.
