"We must build a global ethic rooted in justice, fraternity and the common good". Yesterday, Pope Leo XIV wrote this in a message to Bishop Alexis Mitsuru Shirahama of Hiroshima, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings. The pope anticipates that the "anniversary will serve as a stimulus to the international community to renew its commitment to pursuing lasting peace for the entire human family, a disarmed and disarming peace". In one of the sections of the message, Leo XIV addresses the hibakusha, or survivors, "whose stories of loss and suffering are a warning to all of us to build a safer world and promote a climate of peace". "Even though many years have passed", he writes, "the two cities remain a living testimony of the profound horrors caused by nuclear weapons". As a result, the need for "authentic" peace necessitates "a courageous ban on nuclear weapons, especially those whose power causes an indescribable catastrophe".
